Foto Relevance will be open at 4411 Montrose Suite C on Tuesdays through Fridays from 10:30 am - 5:30 pm and Saturdays from 10:30 am - 5:00 pm, or by appointment. The gallery can be reached at (713) 505 1499.
“We are delighted to be able to make this move within the Museum District,” said Foto Relevance co-owner Bryn Larsen about the transition. “To have a dedicated gallery space will allow us to give greater access to the collecting public to see the work of our contemporary, photo-based artists in a new, sophisticated setting, and will afford lots of opportunities to host events, gallery talks, and collector and patron groups.”
Built in 2004 and designed by internationally-renowned architect Peter Zweig, the 4411 Montrose building is no stranger to such happenings; over the years, it has remained a bustling hub of Houston arts activity. Foto Relevance will be in good company alongside its distinguished neighbors, including Barbara Davis Gallery, Anya Tish Gallery, and David Shelton Gallery.
“As we move house, it seems fitting to be able to inaugurate our walls with Somewhere Else by Jane Szabo, a series that ruminates deeply on the concept of home and place,” remarked co-owner Geoffrey Koslov. In Szabo’s works, hand-constructed homes are covered in a wide array of maps and then photographed in natural settings and within architectural interiors — on beaches, tucked away in grasses, floating atop bathtub bubbles. The maps that surface these homes do not reflect the location of the image, but are instead evocative of locations once explored or longed for. Both dream state and inner search, the series takes the artist and the viewer on a provocative path of escape and wonder.
Jane Szabo is a Los Angeles based fine art photographer with an MFA from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. Using self-portraiture and still life as a vehicle to share stories from her life, her work merges her love for fabrication and materials with conceptual photography.
Szabo’s photography has been exhibited widely, including solo shows at the Museum of Art & History in Lancaster, CA, Orange County Center for Contemporary Art, the Yuma Fine Art Center in Arizona, and the Los Angeles Center for Digital Art. Her work has been included in exhibitions at Oceanside Museum of Art, the Griffin Museum of Photography, The Colorado Center for Photographic Arts, and Foto Fever ins Paris, France, among others. Szabo's work is in the permanent collection of the Los Angeles Museum of Art (LACMA), the Lancaster Museum of Art & History (MOAH), and in private collections throughout the US and Europe.
Following Szabo’s show, Foto Relevance will play host to Letitia Huckaby’s Beautiful Blackness, opening on March 6th in tandem with the 2020 FotoFest Biennial. In dialogue with the Biennial theme of African Cosmologies examining “the complex relationships between contemporary life in Africa, the African diaspora, and global histories of colonialism, photography, and rights and representation,” Huckaby’s Beautiful Blackness is a visual pilgrimage following the path of Exodusters, African Americans who migrated from states along the Mississippi River in Kansas and Oklahoma in the late nineteenth century. Exploring the remains of Freeman’s towns across the south, Huckaby’s landscapes and figurative works — combining photography with heirloom fabrics — are an elegy for a lost promised land. Please follow Foto Relevance for more information about this upcoming show.
